Unblemished Skin & Laser Clinic uses a method for treating onychomycosis in a friendly, quick and effective way with Nd:YAG laser light. Laser light heats evenly throughout the depth of effected nail and skin tissue, effectively weakening and killing parasitic fungi which have infected the client’s nail.

What is Onychomycosis?

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of nails, most commonly toe nails but it can also affect finger nails.  The most common symptoms are discolouring of the nail, often white, but also yellow or black along with a thickening of the nail.  The nail can start to split, flake or break off.  It tends to affect more men than women.

Onychomycosis can affect single toes [often the big toe] or multiple toes.  There is usually none or little pain but the social impact can be huge.

Many Australians have unsightly fungal toenails (Onychomycosis), with statistics indicating that up to 8% of us suffer this condition in silence. However, the chances of acquiring a fungal nail rises sharply with age, and up to 28% of people over the age of 50 have one of more nails infected. Ageing is the most common risk factor due to diminishing blood circulation, nails which are slowing in growth and thickening which increases the susceptibility to infection.  Age gives longer time for exposure to fungi.  Some believe up to 40% of the elderly are affected.

One of the frustrations people experience is poor or incomplete results with topical treatments. Outside of topical creams and ointments, the only option was a long course of oral antifungals which meant taking a tablet for at least 3 months and some possible side effects. It is no wonder that this revolutionary and clinically proven laser treatment has gained great traction around the world with over one hundred thousand procedures completed and more than one million nails treated to date.

How does the Onychomycosis Treatment work?

Laser light heats evenly throughout the depth of effected nail and skin tissue, effectively weakening and killing parasitic fungi which have infected the patient’s nail.

The Procedure

Deep, pulse-profile heating of the nail bed stimulates the killing of parasitic fungus. The natural growth and immune processes of the body are then able to restore the nail to its pristine state. Compared to traditional methods the effects of laser light spread evenly throughout the tissue and are not subject to either the limits of chemical diffusion, as are topicals, or the induction of hepatoxic side effects, as is the case with oral medications.

The treatment is usually performed four times at one week intervals. All of the nails are treated, during every treatment, just in case.  Laser light can also effectively treat fungus which has infected skin tissue.

The Nd:YAG laser penetrates the nail efficiently, safely and evenly heating the nail bed to an appropriate temperature which results in the elimination of the invading fungi and the restoration of the nail.

The single pulse profile, speed and power of Laser light allow a patient’s nails to be treated quickly and effectively. Unparalleled speed makes the procedure convenient and comfortable. In 15 minutes you can be on your way to enjoying healthy, aesthetically pleasing nails without the dangerous side-effects associated with anti-fungal drugs.
